The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 17- Ararat Prison (Vic)

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications.

Station:  Ararat Prison 89085

Opened: 1969

Daily Temperature data from: 1969

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at:  Laverton, Melbourne, Nhill

Location: Co-ordinates   -37.2769   142.9786

Ararat map

About 180km north-west of Melbourne.

The screen is in a prison yard, surrounded by 6 metre walls and close to a bitumen road, concrete path, and large cell blocks.  Walls and buildings shield it from freely flowing winds.

This station is decidedly non-compliant.  Its temperatures are reported at Latest Weather Observations, and are used to make adjustments at Acorn stations, but are unlikely to be reliable.

Truly this is becoming bizarre Ken. This site is wrong for a number of reasons. The actual site within a prison behind tall wall on gravelled ground makes it a very very odd choice for a site by BOM.

But there is another aspect : this is quite a large prison with hundreds of inmates. And the staff number over 300. So really we need to see the weather records from this site as records from the equivalent of a small town with significant Heat Island effect.

Ken you write ” Its temperatures are reported at Latest Weather Observations,” I looked at that link. There is nothing for Ararat in Victoria. Has it been removed recently ?

Yes, it’s there, look under South West.

      • Bill in Oz Says:

That’s also bizarre Ken. Ararat is on the Western highway roughly West of Ballarat. The next major town on the Western Highway after Ararat is Stawell.

It is not in the South Western region of Victoria which takes such towns as Colac, Warrnambool and Portland etc. . It should be listed in the Wimmera region along with Stawell & Horsham; Or perhaps the Central Region along with Ballarat.

this is like sating that Stanhope is in the same region of Qld as Noosa !

It seems that BOM has lost it’s simple geographic awareness as well as it’s knowledge of what is happening with it’s weather stations.

Hey Ken I was working there for a few months this year, get in touch if you want me to find out some more, cheers Yonniestone.
