The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 23- Redesdale (Vic)

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications.

This is very straightforward to assess.

Station:  Redesdale  88051

Opened: 1903

Daily Temperature data from: 1993

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at:  —

Location: Co-ordinates    -37.0194  144.5203

Redesdale map

About 120km north-north-west of Melbourne.

May 2019 BOM Site Plan:

Detail enlarged:

We need nothing else.  The enclosure is not oriented north-south, and the screen is 25 degrees from correct orientation.

This Automatic station is not compliant.  Temperatures spat out every minute are duly reported at Latest Weather Observations, but they are not reliable.  Fortunately no Acorn adjustments have been made using Redesdale.

Hi Ken, don’t know if you’ve seen the Kerang site in Vic at 3 Pyramid Crescent?
If your got it already dismiss this, thanks.

I just looked at 2 Pyramid Crs. Kerang Yonnie. It’s right in the middle of town with it’s UHI effect.

And if we zoom back with Google Earth, we can see all the rural country side around without any UHI effect…

Ummmmm ? It’s very curious that BOM has not moved such a weather station to a new site like the Kerang airport 4-5 ks. away, long ago.

  2. Bill in Oz Says:

Ken I think that you need to explain a little more what is wrong with the BOM weather station at this site.
I am not sure what you mean. Are you saying that the Stevenson screen box is not vertical ?

    • kenskingdom Says:

The enclosure but especially the screen must be orientated exactly to true North so that at local solar noon the sun strikes squarely on the north side but not the others. Any difference means uneven and probably too much heating of the screen.
