The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 29- Launceston (Tas)

This is a crap station in more ways than one!

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications.

Station:  Launceston (Ti Tree Bend) 91237

Opened: 1980

Daily Temperature data from: 1980

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Larapuna, Launceston Airport, Low Head

Location: Co-ordinates   -41.4194 147.1219

Launceston map

About 150km north of Hobart.

But the bloke who did the inspection in 2015 had a better sense of humour (or was cranky at being given the job):

Yes, you can see the dung heaps.

The station is located at the Launceston sewage treatment works, on a bare bank beside a gravel road, with settling ponds to one side and very close to piles of (ahem) excrement.  Thank goodness for technology, it now reports every minute automatically so observers don’t have to go there to do readings.  What’s wrong with having a station here (apart from aesthetic reasons)? Decomposing sewage generating heat, and dark, almost black, settling ponds nearby, plus the water from thousands of hot showers, might raise the temperature a little?  And the siting is hardly representative of the surrounding area.

This station is not compliant- should I say, a real stinker?  Temperatures are uploaded every minute and reported at Latest Weather Observations, and contribute to Acorn adjustments, but are not reliable.

Ahhhhhh ! But Ken is the BOM really wanting to provide us with accurate information ?

This looks like they only want to provide the Australian public ( and specifically the Launceston public ) with smelling pre- heated data !

    😉

    🙂 🙂

  3. Graeme No.3 Says:

Perhaps “a pile of sh*t” refers to the readings?
