The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 47- Norah Head (NSW)

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications.

Station:  Norah Head 61366

Opened: 1989

Daily Temperature data from: 1995

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Sydney.

Location: Co-ordinates   -33.2814 151.5766

But in 2010 there was no flagpole on a cement slab:

If you go to the co-ordinates above and look at the photos taken by a photographer (not a Google vehicle) you will see the areas of concrete, and the grass under the screen is rougher and longer than further up the hill- perhaps half way through the mowing? Or perhaps the screen surrounds haven’t been mowed for a long time.

Thanks to reader “Greg” who sent this recent photo to Jo Nova:

Norah Head is on a slope, close to a small brick building, and 10 metres from a >10m diameter circular cement pad installed after 2010.  It is also neglected, with long grass around the screen- definitely not trimmed to a few centimetres!

This station is not compliant, but temperatures are reported at Latest Weather Observations.    Unreliable temperatures from here have been used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

Wow Ken, how many more left to go ? It’s all becoming a bit of a daze in my mind. And you have not even looked at Qld, Wa & NT yet.

There are >720 stations in Australia. I’ve looked at SA, Vic, and Tasmania, and I’m about halfway through NSW. As of next Wednesday I’ll have posted 59 of the worst. There are nearly as many that are borderline but I’ll probably lump them together and comment on generally. I think I’ll probably get close to 100. I’ll keep posting 2 a day barring interruptions so just check in now and then if it gets too much!
At the end I’ll make some sort of an index to them all.

Thanks for that Ken. It’s huge job ! But there is ‘light’ at the end of the BOMb’s tunnel of non compliant weather stations !

    Good !

Meanwhile, to reassure us the BOM has posted this statement on how they are working to make the service they offer us Australians, even better !

There are NO details about how it is going to do this at all.

There is also a promise to consult with ‘stakeholders’ about the process. But frankly I have not heard a word about any on ground consultation.

If there were a grass fire, does this result in record temperatures?
