The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 61- Burrinjuck Dam (NSW)

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications.

Station:  Burrinjuck Dam 73007

Opened: 1908

Daily Temperature data from: 1965

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Cabramurra, Canberra.

Location: Co-ordinates  -34.9997 148.5984

About 270km south-west of Sydney.

From BOM’s specifications:  “The site should not be in a hollow or on a steep slope. “

While the station is on a level bit of ground about 16 metres wide, the site sits on a steep slope- so steep that the steps are steep.

This station is not compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

This BOM weather station opened in 1908. And BOM has daily online data from 1965. I wonder when Burrinjuck dam on the Murrumbidgee river was built ?
I think it was built as part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro scheme in the 1950’s.
So if the BOM actually released the data it has from 1908 to the present, we would then know for sure, what the actual impact of a huge reservoir of water has on temperatures in the locality.

But frankly, the data is completely unsuitable for adjusting any ACORN BOM site. Doing that is just misinformation.

Ken I did a bit more research. Burrinjuck was not built as part of the Snowy Mountains scheme. It was built by the NSW government to support the Murrumbidgee Irrigation scheme. It was started in 1907 but not completed in it’s present form until 1999. (!!)

There is also an interesting section in Wikipedia about Climate in this dam area.

Long term rainfall averages, highs & lows as well as temperature average highs & lows..which are ‘suspect’ as you have discovered.
