The screen is close to a timber picket fence, a concrete path, a shed and a house.  The buildings block cooling south-east winds.

Moruya Heads is part of the ACORN-SAT network used for analysing Australian climate trends.

This station is not compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 52- Guyra (NSW)

August 25, 2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications.

Station:  Guyra 56229

Opened: 1981

Daily Temperature data from: 1981

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Inverell, Port Macquarie.

Location: Co-ordinates   -30.2122 151.6794

BOM site plan 2018:

Guyra plan2018

This site plan shows the screen is about 10 metres from the hospital building and 15 to 20 metres from asphalt and concrete areas- but what is the dark oval in the satellite image?  Site plans for 2013, 2014, and 2015 tell us:

Guyra plan131415

Piles of wood chips for garden mulch have been stored there over the years, and have been very close to the screen.

Further, the site has moved at least three times, as the 2012 plan shows:

Guyra plan2012

The screen has been and probably still is close to mounds of wood chips at varying heights and distances, possibly a heat source on cold nights as the wood chips decompose.  As well, it has moved at least three times so exposure has changed.

This station is not compliant, but temperatures are reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 51- Cape Nelson (Vic)

August 24, 2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications.

Station:  Cape Nelson 90184

The screen is surrounded closely by shrubs to one to two metres or more, there used to be shrubs to 0.5m inside the enclosure, and now there appears to be bare gravel.  There are buildings to the north and west, and stone walls to the north-west and north-east.

This station is not compliant, but temperatures are reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 50- Point Hicks (Vic)

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications.

Station:  Point Hicks  84070

Opened: 1962

Daily Temperature data from: 1966

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Gabo Island, Orbost, Sale.

Location: Co-ordinates   -37.8017 149.2747

The screen is surrounded closely by shrubs to one metre  or more, and beside an old concrete slab.  While the site has not changed very much, the vegetation keeps the screen warmer as it forms a barrier, and shrubs and trees act as a “blanket” keeping warmer air underneath and slowing the escape of IR radiation.

This station is not compliant, but temperatures are reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 49- Singleton (NSW)

August 23, 2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications.

Station:  Singleton 61430

Opened: 2017

Daily Temperature data from: 2017

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: —.

As this station is new, there is no metadata about it at Climate Data Online.  Also, it is a defence site.  Location is given as -32.7   151.16.  However, I have located the station at:

Location: Co-ordinates   -32.697553 151.15808

Google Maps:-

Singleton map

About 150km north of Sydney.

2019 Google Maps satellite image:

The screen is on bare dirt with several graded tracks close by.

This station is not compliant, but temperatures are reported at Latest Weather Observations.    It is too new for temperatures to be used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 48- Scone (NSW)

August 23, 2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications.

Station:  Scone 61363

Opened: 1988

Daily Temperature data from: 1990

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Williamtown.

Location: Co-ordinates   -32.0335 150.8264

Scone map

About 200km north of Sydney.

2010 view from the road:

Scone road2010

Out in the open in a paddock of long grass.  Looks good.

2015 BOM Site Plan:

Scone plan2015

Grass sprayed out around the screen, so bare dirt compared with surrounding 0.5m grass.  But in 2012, there was a different problem:

Scone plan2012

Grass 0.6m (2 ft) around the instruments, compared with 0.2m elsewhere.

2019 satellite image:

Scone aerial

Looks OK? We can’t tell from this.  But this site has more history:

2002 site plan:

Scone plan2002

In 2002 there was a dirt road within a few metres of the screen.  You can see traces of it in the satellite image.

While in an ideal location, this site has changed over the years: once there was a dirt road close by; the surrounding grass paddock has varied from 0.2m to 0.5m high grass; and the area around the screen has varied from “sparse” due to weed control, to 0.6m high grass.

This station is not compliant, but temperatures are reported at Latest Weather Observations.    Unreliable temperatures from here have been used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 47- Norah Head (NSW)

August 22, 2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications.

Station:  Norah Head 61366

Opened: 1989

But in 2010 there was no flagpole on a cement slab:

Norah Hd plan2010

If you go to the co-ordinates above and look at the photos taken by a photographer (not a Google vehicle) you will see the areas of concrete, and the grass under the screen is rougher and longer than further up the hill- perhaps half way through the mowing? Or perhaps the screen surrounds haven’t been mowed for a long time.

Thanks to reader “Greg” who sent this recent photo to Jo Nova:

Norah Hd grass

Norah Head is on a slope, close to a small brick building, and 10 metres from a >10m diameter circular cement pad installed after 2010.  It is also neglected, with long grass around the screen- definitely not trimmed to a few centimetres!

This station is not compliant, but temperatures are reported at Latest Weather Observations.    Unreliable temperatures from here have been used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

But in 2008 the screen was in a bare grassy oval:

Since 2008, basketball courts, paths, and a gravel driveway have been added.  The surroundings have changed markedly.

This station is not compliant, but temperatures are reported at Latest Weather Observations.    Luckily, unreliable temperatures from here are not used to adjust data at Acorn sites.
