Street view 2017: (by Hamed Moqadasi)

Gundagai street

The objects indicated with arrows are sprinklers mounted on old lawn mower bases, so the site is irrigated.  The screen is also close to a playground with rubber softfall, and a large area of bitumen at the caravan park entrance.  It is close to buildings and trees, and 30 metres from a swimming pool.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

One Response to “The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 72- Gundagai (NSW)”

  1. Bill in Oz Says:

That caravan park looks empty in the aerial view Ken. But there are ~ 90 sites and I imagine there are time when it is full of caravans camped there overnight for a few days. And of course all these caravans rely on A/C for heating and cooling.

So even though this BOM weather station is not located in the middle of Gundagai, it is in the middle of an area of urban Heat Island effect.

It’s curious also that we all know that irrigating the lawns will lead to cooler temperatures in the vicinity. ( Because the grass transpires water vapour into the air. ) And the BOM weather station will be effected by this as well. But it seems BOM does not know this.

Is this ignorance or incompetence or perhaps just laziness ?
