  1. Bill in Oz Says:

Wikipedia has this information about the district quoting an early explorer in 1817 : “John Oxley and his exploration party were the first European visitors to the Hillston district, in 1817. Oxley wrote in his journal: “country uninhabitable and useless for all purposes of civilised man”.

Modern day Hillston has developed despite this handicap. Wikipedia says : “Agriculture is the main industry in Hillston mostly oriented towards livestock, grain, cotton, citrus and vegetables, utilising irrigation from the Lachlan River and underground water sources.”

I doubt that much irrigation is happening at the moment around Hillston because of the current drought.

However BOM’s long term records for temperature have probably been affected by the extent of irrigation in the district with increased water vapour in the air.

Yet another reason for not relying on this weather station for adjusting ACORN BOM weather records.

Ken you state that “10.5% of all BOM stations are non compliant” .

But that total includes roughly 50% which you have not yet examined and reported on.

So surely it would be more accurate to state that the non compliance rate is ~ 20% of the stations you have checked so far.
