The screen is within a few metres of a 2 metre hedge and a 6 metre tree, with more trees nearby.  It is also 30 metres from a three hectare orchard which is probably irrigated, and covered with hail cloth.  Applethorpe (with nearby Stanthorpe) is the coldest place in Queensland in summer and winter.  The nearby cloth covered orchard is likely to keep the site warmer at night.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

Percentage of all sites not compliant: 11.6%

Ummm I wonder what kind if irrigation system is used on that orchard ?
An over head sprinkler system will definitely keep it warmer at night. A drip irrigation system probably less so. But we cannot see the system as it is hidden under the hail netting.

Very curious as pome fruits all need Winter chill to flower & set fruit. And here in SA some growers are worried about reduced cold chilly days and nights..So accurately measuring the real temperature is crucial. But BOM again cannot get it’s act together.
