The screen is close to a large area of bare dirt, and since 2014 the surroundings have changed from long grass.  There is a wood fence 20 to 30 metres away on two sides, and a motel with what appears to be a row of dongas to the south-west.

This station is an Acorn site but is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations but apparently not used to adjust data at other Acorn sites.

Percentage of all sites not compliant: 12.02%

Ken, what are dongas ? It’s not a word used here in SA.

A donga is a portable accommodation or small office building widely used at construction and mine sites. They’re cheap and nasty but can be made very comfortable with air con and all mod cons.

Thanks for that Ken. I wondered if those dongas were just shelters of actually rooms for living in or working in. And it seems that in this case it is the latter. And this being warmish Qld. they will all be individually fitted with Air conditioning and maybe reverse cycling units. That’s in addition to the air con units at the motel buildings.

Miles according to Wikipedia underwent a period of rapid population growth from ~1100 in 2011 to ~1700 in 2016.

Why ? Well it seems that coal mining & coal seam gas have become important industries in the area as well as the mining of bentonite clay.

I suggest that the BOM weather station is also very close to a major source of ‘urban generated heat’ from the fly-in fly out workers accommodated at the motel and it’s dongas.

Off Topic : Ken I have been reading over on Jen Marohassy’s blog. She did a post about Lady Elliot Island in Qld. and the BOM’s temp record there. So I tool a look at it on Google Earth. The island is about 40& cleared for a run way for planes to land..And the Stevenson screen is planted jabout 10 meters away from the runway. .This would have to have an impact on temperatures surely ?,152.7161,0.90946047a,3377.44200376d,35y,-0h,0t,0r

Yep, Lady Elliott Island is a doozy, and coming up shortly.
