Rockhampton is an Acorn site, but the Bureau does not use it for climate analysis because it has been subject to Urban Heat Island effect.  The screen is 35 metres from a large bitumen area- too close- and if used for aircraft start up or turning that is far too close.  But the chief problem is that the instrument area is on a mound built up 1.5 metres above the surrounding area- to keep the instruments clear of flood waters as the airport is built on the Fitzroy flood plain.  This means that on still cold nights in winter, cold air will drain away from the screen and so minimum temperatures reported will be warmer.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 14.64%.

“but the Bureau does not use it for climate analysis because it has been subject to Urban Heat Island effect”

One would think that this disqualifies almost every gauge used to promote the farce.

Yes Ken Rockie BOM weather station is big stuff up ! Some additional thoughts :
1: “Rockhampton is an Acorn site, but the Bureau does not use it for climate analysis” What exactly does this mean ? ACORN is the BOM’s prized list of A grade weather stations which are supposedly beyond error. And thus used for the BOM’s Global Warming scare campaign and reproduced internationally for the same purpose.

2: I see there is a 2 story BOM building there at Rockhampton airport. Clearly is is a major BOM regional office. There is parking for maybe 10 cars. So presumably the number of BOM staffers working there is roughly that number…..It’s good to read that they know about UHI effect. But the BOM weather station a hundred meters outside their building, does not comply with the BOM’s own guidelines. Just who is the BOM employing to make up it’s expert professional staff ?

      1. The 8 UHI affected stations are apparently not included in regional and national means used for analysing climate trends.
      2. Rocky BOM has NO staff. All staff were removed a couple of years ago amidst some community angst. I went to their “consultation” meeting. I don’t think there are any staff outside Brisbane (but I might be wrong.) Balloons are launched automatically. The only visits are when something goes wrong or to reload the balloon launcher.

      • Bill in Oz Says:

        That is double bad.
No doubt the BOM staff in Brisbane & all the other capitol cities do NOT know a thing about the weather and climate beyond the area they actually live in : big cities with lots of UHI effects .
