Please refer back to my first post for site specifications and to No. 92- Logan City for 2018 specifications.

Station: Townsville Aero 32040

Opened: 1940

Daily Temperature data from: 1940

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Cairns, Charters Towers.

Location:   Co-ordinates -19.2483 146.7661

The station is built on a mound raised 2 metres above surrounding ground level, again to keep it above flood waters I presume.  The site is cluttered with instruments on concrete bases.  Large areas of bitumen carpark and sheds are within 80 metres.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

FAIL

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 16.30%.

Well done Ken spotting the 2 meter high mound ! I think this means that the BOM is measuring the temp higher above ground than normal.. Ummm ?

But also Townsville is a city of 173,000 people with lots of big concrete building, cars, trucks, A/C’s etc.. So there is a big dollop of UHI about there as well.

But at least this BOM station is not close to prop winds or jet engine exhausts as some BOM stations are at airports.

Ken I have written up a post on my own Facebook page about this investigation of BOM…You are welcome to make comments or corrections if you wish..

    Bill,
I don’t think the BoM worries about elevation. The ‘new’ Adelaide station is about 55 metres above sea level (and about 5 metres below the original site). I expect they will claim that the 2 are comparable.

    • Bill in Oz Says:

Graeme if the BOM is not worried about elevation then why not measure temperature at a constant 1000 meters above the ground everywhere ?

It would not mean anything. But definitely give curious results all the time which could be used for whatever scare campaign they wish to
      initiate !.
