The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 126- Mareeba (Qld)

Station: Mareeba Airport 31210

Opened: 2000

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at:  Cairns, Weipa.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -17.0704 145.4293

The things that are not mentioned in site plans!  In this case that aircraft are parked, and probably started and turned, only 35 to 40 metres away from the screen, much closer than the hardstand.  (The BOM specified distance is 80 metres, the WMO specification is 150 metres.  This is because starting and turning aircraft throttle up and generate lots of propwash.)  As well, the taxiway is less than 60 metres away.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

FAIL

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 17.4%.

    It’s the base for the North Qld Aero Club. And I counted 40 + light aircraft there on the ground.. So what with regular airline flights as well, there is a lot of traffic; and a lot of prop wash as well.

    The BOM station also seems to be on bare ground..not a grassed area..
