The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 128- Coconut Island (Qld)

Station: Coconut Island  27054

Opened: 1987

110km north-east of TI, 90km south of Daru (PNG), 455km south-west of Port Moresby, 2,200km north of Brisbane.

The screen is close to a bare sand track, a shed, a greenhouse, and 12 metre trees.  There is a very large desalination plant 40 metres away, but the main problem is the lack of exposure.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations but not used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

FAIL

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 17.68%.

    I guess we are lucky this BOM weather station is not part of the BOM’s ACORN set of stations……

    But once again we see what appears to be systemic inability to put weather stations where they will accurately measure temperatures.

    And BOM is supposed to be the professional expert body !

    Bugger !
