The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 131- Century Mine (Qld)

Friday 11/10/2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications and to No. 92- Logan City for 2018 specifications.  If you wish to check on this (or any) site for yourself, go to my post on how to check for yourself.

Station: Century Mine 29167

Opened: 2003

Daily Temperature data from: 2003

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at:  Camooweal, Richmond (Qld).

Location:   Co-ordinates  -18.7569 138.7056

Century map

240km north-west of Mt Isa, 850km west of Townsville.

BOM site plan 2010:

Century plan2010

Google satellite image 2019:

Century aerial

The screen enclosure appears grassed but is surrounded by bare dirt.  Apart from unrepresentative surface, this will mean dust will coat the screen and probably enter it, coating the temperature probe.  Very large areas of bare dirt are nearby, and the screen is 70 metres from the airport apron.  While the plan shows the enclosure oriented to Magnetic North, that is probably an error and the screen is (hopefully) oriented to True North.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 18.09%.

  1. Bill In Oz Says:

Ummmm ? I don’t know Ken..How old is the Google Earth photo ? It’s been very dry there in the North the past year.. So grass around the enclosure may have died off… And yes there is now lots of dust at this BOM site…
But I doubt there is fresh water to keep grass green and growing..

The site is there for the benefit of aircraft using the airstrip. Not for measuring climate change.

BOM’s major mistake is using this site’s temperature data for adjusting ACORN sites elsewhere…..

But then homogenisation is a stupid and dopey non science business anyway.
