Opened: 1963

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Darwin

Location:   Co-ordinates -11.4021 130.4217

125km north-west of Darwin.

The screen is very close to trees on three sides, and the ground around the screen appears to be bare dirt.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

FAIL

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 20.17%.

    So the bare dirt absorbs the energy of the sun and then warms the air around the thermometer more than otherwise…

    But Ken I wonder, given that this is a monsoonal area, will those trees on three sides have any substantial effect ? It will shade the screen from wind, yes. But does this effect temperature readings ?

    Apart from reducing wind, trees have the effect of insulating a site by maintaining warm air close to the ground at night, increased humidity, and extra downwards IR from the foliage.
