Opened: 2001

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Giles.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -23.2656 129.3844

460km west of Alice Springs.

The screen is 9 metres from a bare soil graded drain, and hundreds of metres of bare ground, not representative of the natural spinnifex and low scrub.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

FAIL

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 21%.

    Another interesting BOM weather site Ken.. More or less right smack bang in the middle of Australia and in the desert. And it’s an airport weather station – presumably installed to ensure safe operations by aircraft landing & taking off at Kintore.. But the BOM has not ensured that the station site is compliant…. Bare ground gets hotter than Bathroom ground with vegetation. And then radiates that heat into the air and so affects the thermometer.. Ummmmm ?
    So this is a site which should NOT be used to adjust ACORN sites…Just for it’s original purpose : ensuring safe aircraft operations …
