The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 154- Lajamanu (NT)

Friday 18/10/2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications and to No. 92- Logan City for 2018 specifications.  If you wish to check on this (or any) site for yourself, go to my post on how to check for yourself.

Station: Lajamanu Airport 14829

Opened: 1952

Daily Temperature data from: 1967

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Halls Creek, Tennant Creek, Victoria River Downs.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -18.3324 130.6361

650km south of Darwin.

BOM site plan 2019:

Google satellite image 2019:

The screen is too close to 2 to 3 metre scrub. The instruments are enclosed and obstructed by thick scrub. There are much more open areas available. The satellite image shows green grass except around the instruments, so the area may have been sprayed out.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 21.27%.

That concludes the Northern Territory section. Out of 51 sites I could check, 12 (23.5%) do not comply with specifications, however there are another 17 which are marginal.

27% of sites checked so far are not compliant.

Tomorrow I start on Western Australia.

  1. Bill In Oz Says:

Wikipedia says that this is a community which is 92% aboriginal and that the local language is Walpiri.

But I suspect that the local BOM station is cared for by the airport staff. That neat pearl shaped bare ground around the BOM station is too neat & tidy. AS you say it’s been sprayed out to stop any plants growing.

And the data from this BOM station is used to adjust ACORN sites at: Halls Creek, Tennant Creek, Victoria River Downs.
