Saturday 19/10/2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications and to No. 92- Logan City for 2018 specifications.  If you wish to check on this (or any) site for yourself, go to my post on how to check for yourself.

Station: Bidyadanga 3030

Opened: 1891

Daily Temperature data from: 1957

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Broome, Port Hedland.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -18.6844 121.7803

90km south-west of Broome, 1,590km north-east of Perth.

BOM site plan 2018:

Google satellite image 2019:

The screen is too close to buildings and large trees. Vehicles use bare dirt tracks near and around the screen and are parked nearby. (The 2013 plan shows a “semi-permanent food van” between the screen and the office.)

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 21.41%.

Wikipedia has a post about Bidyadanga here :,_Western_Australia
There is a chart outlining Bidyadanga’s climate. And it is based on the readings from the BOM station which as you point out is not compliant with BOM’s guidelines. ( Curiously the BOM source for that climate chart has not disappeared. )

As you point out there is bare dirt all around the BOM weather station. This is probably due to vehicles driving over the surface around it. There are not many sealed roads at Bidyandanga but lots of dirt tracks.
Curiously there are ( irrigated ? ) areas of green in this community. A football oval, grassed lawns, gardens, trees and even irrigated tree lines.

So there are plenty of potentially better sites compliant with the BOM’s guidelines. But I guess the BOM just was not interested in doing thisas it has recorded data from this site since 1957 – even though this data is used to adjust ACORN site data elsewhere in WA.
