The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 173- Jurien Bay (WA)

Opened: 1968

Location:   Co-ordinates  -30.3081 115.0311

200km north of Perth.

The screen is on bare sand and very close to vegetation to 4 metres, and less than 5 metres from a 3 metre concrete path.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.


Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 23.9%.

    I can barely see the BOM weather station because of all the native shrubs and trees.

    And it is also located in a ‘gully’ sheltered by the sand dune just to the West..

    Jurien Bay has a population of 1700 people. However it is a holiday town and Wikipedia notes that the population doubles in the holiday season. ( Christmas )

    Here is the actual statement on Wikipedia :

    “Today, the town is experiencing a house building boom, as its population and popularity as a holiday destination grow. The principal employers in the town are housing and building construction, retail, tourism, and crayfishing. Local residents claim that the town’s population more than doubles during the holiday season.”

    So I suspect there is some UHI effect happening on a season basis.
