The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 174- Kalbarri (WA)

Friday 25/10/2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications and to No. 92- Logan City for 2018 specifications.  If you wish to check on this (or any) site for yourself, go to my post on how to check for yourself.

Station: Kalbarri 8251

Opened: 1970

Daily Temperature data from: 1970

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Carnarvon, Geraldton.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -27.7119 114.1650

500km north of Perth.

BOM site plan 2015:

Google satellite image 2019:

The satellite image pretty much agrees with the 2015 site plan, with the screen very close to extensive bare gravel carpark. However, before 2015 the site was much different, as the 2014 site plan shows:

BOM site plan 2014:

And the 2010 street view shows the screen almost hidden by vegetation (and the bare gravel carpark).

Google street view 2010:

The site has changed, being cleared sometime between May 2014 and May 2015. It is still too close to the carpark.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

FAIL

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 24.03%.

As Graeme said last night OMG !

What a lousy site for BOM weather station ! Lots of bare ground to heat up the thermometer at any time of the year.

Kalbarri has a population of 1700.

Wikipedia has some interesting comments about Kalbarri :
” The town attracts 200,000 tourists every year, with the population of the town swelling to 8,000 during holiday seasons.”

In other words a huge amount of Urban Heat Island Effect is also happening here.
There are lots of potential alternative sites which would be compliant.

But it seems BOM does not bloody care !

Bill, I can’t open an email you sent me this morning. Can you send it again please? (Or else put it in a comment here with 2 or 3 internet links- it will go to moderation and only I can see it.)
