The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 198- Munglinup West (WA)

Opened: 2002

Location:   Co-ordinates   -33.5547 120.6997

491km south-east of Perth.

Close to trees and bushes, but also very close to a dirt track and a large area of cultivation, which can be very dusty (more on this problem in a coming post) and can vary from bare ground to green growing crop.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.


Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 27.35%.

    Hypothetically this should be an idea location for a BOM weather station. However the changing character of all the nearby cropping paddocks makes it problematic.

    And it is clearly a very sandy area. All that exposed sandy soil will have a high albedo and tend to generate higher temperatures than otherwise. And that will of course be reduced after the crop is growing.

    The same issue exists for the nearby track..High albedo – higher temperatures !
