The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 201- Corrigin (WA)

Friday 08/11/2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications and to No. 92- Logan City for 2018 specifications.  If you wish to check on this (or any) site for yourself, go to my post on how to check for yourself.

Station: Corrigin 10536

Opened: 1910

Daily Temperature data from: 1948

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Cunderdin, Esperance, Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Katanning, Merredin, Wandering.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -32.3292 117.8733

190km east of Perth.

BOM site plan 2013:

Google satellite image 2019:

Google street view 2008:

The screen is close to a fibro fence bordering the bowling green, and less than 6 metres from a concrete footpath and wide bitumen road. The fence is unlikely to be changed being full of asbestos, especially if the bowls club is as short of funds as most are. The tree 15 metres to the west grew from 2 metres to 6 metres between 1998 and 2013.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

FAIL

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 27.76%.

  1. William in Oz Says:

A small wheat & pastoral town with a population of ~ 900. So not much UHI effect as such.
But the location of the BOM weather station close to the concrete path & tarred road, and the fibro cement fence, must have an impact on observations recorded.

Wikipedia has a nice coloured chart showing the climate statistics for Corrigin. But in view of the non compliance of this site, I wonder how accurate it is.

My guess is that the weather station is recording higher than accurate maximum temperatures.
