The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 203- Wagin (WA)

Opened: 1891

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Albany, Bridgetown, Cape Leeuwin, Katanning, Wandering

Location:   Co-ordinates -33.3075 117.3403

200km south-east of Perth.

The screen has a bare dirt path leading to it. It is 10 metres from a bitumen street. A colourbond fence is to the north-east and an 18 metre tree is less than 20 metres away. More trees are to the south.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.


Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 28.04%.

    There is also the swimming complex just over the colorbond fence with it’s 3 pools for the locals to cool off in.

    But surely that also cools down the air in the vicinity as well.

        Yes of course Ken..Bodies of water like this ‘stabilise’ the temperature range in the area around them.

        I wonder if it is open in Winter. Some swimming complexes roll out bubble mats to warm the water in Autumn & early Winter so the swimming season is extended. Others close down & pump out the water over Winter in which case the effects of the pools would be present only when they are open for the swimming season.

        BOM did not think this all through when locating the station at this site !

    By what kind of common sense could the observations at this non compliant site be ‘used’ to adjust the observations at 4 ACORN sites at Albany, Bridgetown, Cape Leeuwin, Katanning, Wandering ?

    Has the BOM lost all common sense ? Or is it just the idiots who are employed to sit in front of computer screen and never actually go out to a BOM weather station site ?
