The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 210- Dalwallinu (WA)

Monday 11/11/2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications and to No. 92- Logan City for 2018 specifications.  If you wish to check on this (or any) site for yourself, go to my post on how to check for yourself.

Station: Dalwallinu 8297

Opened: 1997

Daily Temperature data from: 1997

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Geraldton.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -30.2761, 116.6714

200km north-north-east of Perth.

BOM site plan 2018:

Google satellite image 2019:

Surrounded by an open wheat paddock? Beautiful- except the paddock is cultivated and planted, the wheat grows, matures, and is harvested. The surrounding environment varies from bare soil to luxuriantly growing green crop, to dry, mature wheat 30cm to 40cm high, then back to very short stubble. And the satellite image shows the crop and farm machinery tracks within a very few metres (<5) of the screen.

This Acorn station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at other Acorn sites.

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 29.01%.

Ok So this BOM weather station is on private property and it is a cropping paddock.

But surely the BOM has some kind of arrangement with the owners to leave this area as natural as possible ?

    Apparently not !

Apart from the soil going through a whole range of states from bare soil to growing crop, to harvested crop with stubble, there is the fact that the farm machinery is powered by large diesel engines with exhausts pumping out hot fumes..
