The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 218- York (WA)

Wednesday 13/11/2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications and to No. 92- Logan City for 2018 specifications.  If you wish to check on this (or any) site for yourself, go to my post on how to check for yourself.

Station: York 10311

Opened: 1996

Daily Temperature data from: 1966

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Wandering.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -31.8997 116.7650

85km east of Perth.

BOM site plan 2017:

Google satellite image 2019:

Google Street view 2015:

The screen is three metres from a dirt road, close to an area of bare gravel, close to two wheat paddocks, and across the road from a sand and gravel yard. It is also too close to shrubs and trees.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 30.11%.

That concludes the Western Australian series. WA is the worst for compliance- 63 stations out of 112 I could check are not compliant. That is 56.25%.

I will next review many stations I had originally passed over as marginal (or else I was in a hurry to pick the ‘low hanging fruit’). I will also review the number of ‘checkable’ stations which will give a final figure for percentage.

Posts will now be sporadic for a couple of weeks.

  1. William in Oz Says:

Yea Gods ! What are all those roads doing so close to the BOM screen ?

And a wheat crop paddock just meters away, in the only direction without a road !

    A BOM fail again !
