The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 226- Kingscote (SA)

Saturday 16/11/2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications and to No. 92- Logan City for 2018 specifications.  If you wish to check on this (or any) site for yourself, go to my post on how to check for yourself.

Station: Kingscote Aero 22841

Opened: 1994

Daily Temperature data from: 1994

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: —

Location:   Co-ordinates  -35.7114 137.5231

132km south-west of Adelaide.

BOM site plan 2017:

Google satellite image 2019:

Wider view:

The screen is a few metres from two bitumen circles with a vehicle track. While the screen is far enough from the aircraft apron to avoid propwash, this is too close to a very wide area of tarmac. Until 2001 there was an area of bare ground near the windsock, labelled “helipad” though it seems unlikely helicopters would be permitted so close to a windsock.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations but not used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

FAIL

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 31.22%.

Ken the Google Earth photo of the airport is out of date.It shows earthworks happening for the upgrade of the airport. That upgrade has since been completed.in 2018.

The upgrade of the landing strip and terminal now allow jet aircraft to land and take off at Kingscote with Qantas flying regular flights to Ki from Sydney & Melbourne in addition to flights to & from Adelaide.

Sooooooo.. Is the screen far enough away at all times, from jet engine exhaust fumes ?

This needs new photos or a more recent Google Earth image..

Just tried to find some via Google search. No luck.

But there is a SA government plan to expand tourism to KI via direct flights there from Melbourne & Sydney with Jet aircraft rather than propeller aircraft.
