Ken I know Keith a bit. The bitumen road you mention is the Duke’s Highway to Melbourne. It is the main highway to Melbourne from Adelaide and has a huge level of traffic. It’s rarely empty : cars, trucks, semis and B Doubles all pas with a few meters of this BOM weather station.

At that point it is a divided highway with 2 lanes each way with a lane on each side for parking; effectively it is 8 lanes wide of bitumen.

I’ve often stopped at the bakery nearby for coffee when traveling to Melbourne. ( It’s roughly 60 meters away from the BOM station.) On a Summer’s day the heat rising off the road there at Keith is a shocker.

    Extraordinarily incompetent of BOM !

  2. Graeme No.3 Says:

Incompetent? All that bitumen raises the temperature, which can be pointed out as “proof” of AGW.
P.S. the Duke’s Highway does quiet down around 2 a.m. to 4.30 a.m. Don’t stay at one of the roadside motels there or Bordertown if you are looking for a quiet night.

    • Bill in Oz Says:

      Exactly Graeme !

However don’t be too hard on the motels at Keith. We stayed in one on the Western side of Keith in May 2017. Well back off the highway and pretty quiet.
