The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 242- Whyalla (SA)

Opened: 1945

Location:   Co-ordinates -33.0539 137.5206

230km north-west of Adelaide.

The screen is on bare dirt and is 52 metres from the aircraft apron and 42 metres from the helipad. The screen will be subject to propwash and dust.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations but not used to adjust data at Acorn sites.


Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 33.43%. One third of all stations are not compliant with BOM specifications.

    Ken the really interesting thing about this site is that is on bare dirt. And the bare dirt is not natural. All the natural vegetation has been cleared away. This is obvious when looking at the Google Earth image.

    Another aspect : until the last year or so Whyalla was in long term decline. However that has changed with Gupta’s buying the local steel works etc. Now there is major investment happening with increased plane arrivals and jet aircraft flying direct from Sydney.
