The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 246- Woomera (SA)

Station: Woomera Aerodrome 16001

Opened: 1949

Daily Temperature data from: 1949

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Marree, Oodnadatta, Tarcoola.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -31.1558 136.8054

450km north-west of Adelaide.

The instrument area is surfaced with blue-metal, and the area around is bare dirt and devoid of any vegetation.

This Acorn station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at other Acorn sites.

FAIL

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 33.98%.

    Ken here we have another example of a BOM weather station being established at the airport because of the obvious need for weather information by flight crew..

    This purpose was/is being met adequately by this BOM station despite it being non compliant.

    However the BOM then re-purposed the station by including it in it’s ACORN list of stations. And that ACORN list exists for different purpose : promoting the the idea of global warming.

    And this purpose requires a much higher level of guideline siting compliance if it is to generate accurate observations.

    The BOM has NOT done this.

    Bugger !
