The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 251- Horsham (Vic)

Station: Horsham Aerodrome 79100

Opened: 1990

Daily Temperature data from: 1997

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Mount Gambier.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -36.6697 142.1731

280km north-west of Melbourne.

The screen is right beside a bare dirt vehicle track, 7 metres from a bitumen circle under the wind sock, less than 10 metres from an extensive area of cropping, which can vary from bare soil, to lush growing crop, to mature crop ready for harvest up to 40 centimetres- not to mention dust.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.


Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 34.67%.

    Ummm there is a dirt track running right past the BOM stevenson screen. And that wind sock with it’s black heat absorbing surface ( I’m not sure about it being tar Ken. It gets hot in Summer in Horsham and tar like that would just melt ! But hey, the BOM may not know or care !

    And those cropping paddocks are very extensive…

    Not not a site which can give accurate temperature readings at all.
