The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 252- Longerenong (Vic)

Opened: 1860

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Nhill.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -36.6722 142.2991

270km north-west of Melbourne.

The screen is in the middle of a paddock of cropping, which can vary from bare soil, to lush growing crop, to mature crop ready for harvest up to 40 centimetres- not to mention dust.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.


Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 34.81%.

    Another interesting BOM weather station Ken. This one is located on the ‘campus’ of the Victorian Longerenong Agricultural College. Here is where generations of Victorian farming families sent their sons & daughters to learn about farming. Longerenong’s area of speciality is broad acre crops such as wheat, barley, canola, lupins, etc.

    And I suspect that this BOM weather station forms part of the wider college farming curriculum.

    Thus this weather station which does not comply with the BOM’s own guidelines for siting such stations is a bit of an educational travesty !
