The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 253- Warracknabeal (Vic)

Monday 25/11/2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications and to No. 92- Logan City for 2018 specifications.  If you wish to check on this (or any) site for yourself, go to my post on how to check for yourself.

Station: Kellalac (Warracknabeal Airport) 78018

Opened: 2016

Daily Temperature data from: 2016

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: —

Location:   Co-ordinates   -36.3204 142.4161

280km north-west of Melbourne.

BOM site plan 2015:

Google satellite image 2019:

Wider view:

The screen is in the middle of a cropped field, which can vary from bare soil, to lush growing crop, to mature crop ready for harvest up to 40 centimetres- not to mention dust. This may have been sprayed out- the satellite image shows it as completely different to green grass (and other green crops) around it. It may well be compliant in a year or so- but not between December 2016 and the time of the satellite image.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations but too new to be used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 34.94%.

  1. William in Oz Says:

Ken that Google Earth image may well be from November 2018- January 2019. It was dry in the Malle last year . And some farmers bailed their crops for animal feed because the crops did not grow well enough and then were frosted late in the season.

But no this BOM weather station fails to meet the BOM’s own guidelines.
