The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 264- Tatura (Vic)

Friday 29/11/2019

Please refer back to my first post for site specifications and to No. 92- Logan City for 2018 specifications.  If you wish to check on this (or any) site for yourself, go to my post on how to check for yourself.

Station: Tatura Inst. Sustainable Ag 81049

Opened: 1942

Daily Temperature data from: 1965

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Deniliquin, Kerang, Laverton, Rutherglen.

Location:   Co-ordinates  -36.4378 145.2672

155km north of Melbourne CBD.

BOM site plan 2014:

Google satellite image 2019:

This is a good illustration of how surroundings can change in under 5 years. In 2014 the site was decidedly non-compliant, very close to bare dirt. The satellite image shows the area just over the fence well vegetated, but nearby a large circular area (centre pivot irrigation?) of bare dirt with what could be grape vines radiating from the centre.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

FAIL

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 36.46%.

Ken this BOM weather station is located at the Tatura Horticultural Research station
    http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/agriculture/innovation-and-research/research-centres/tatura

There is no grape vine research listed for this area. That happens near Mildura I think ( Merbein ? )
But there is an experimental pear planting happening there at Tatura. So maybe this weird circular block is it ?

But as you say it does illustrate how massive change can happen with significant affects on the BOM weather station gear observations.
