Ken I find myself perplexed. I know this country.I owned a small farm &lived not far away for 15 years. The forested mountain country of East Gippsland is beautiful. The home of wildlife that has vanished elsewhere.

My perplexity comes simply from wondering how anyone can get an accurate idea of temperature in this forested region unless a weather station is placed in the forests ?

Placing a BOM station in a cleared area away from the forest would yield different result on the thermometer. Probably with more extreme hot & cold temperatures being recorded. But would they be representative of this vast forest region ?

That is the heart of the problem with surface stations. The recorded temperature is an accurate description of the temperature inside the screen at that location and a few metres around- no more. And the minute you change a pristine natural area by clearing an area and putting a screen in it the temperature will no longer be representative.

By the way Ken, this is a fire tower spotting tower site – at least it used to be when I lived in that part of the world…So it is quite an elevated site up on top of Mt Nowa Nowa !
