The Wacky World of Weather Stations: No. 113- Mackay (Qld)

Opened: 1959

Data used to adjust Acorn sites at: Charters Towers, Townsville.

Location:   Co-ordinates    -21.1172  149.2169

About 810km north of Brisbane.

The screen is on a slope, near a steel fence on a concrete base, close to thick 10 metre tall trees, 18m from a bitumen road, 23m from a bitumen carpark, and 25m from a building.

This station is non-compliant, with temperatures reported at Latest Weather Observations and used to adjust data at Acorn sites.

FAIL

Percentage of all Australian sites not compliant: 15.61%.

    Ken, you failed to mention one other important aspect of this BOM weather station : It is on a hill.. Quite a steep hill which why it has been left forested. Also the track up to the BOM weather building and station is narrow and winding. And it shares the site with that huge water tank which probably supplies drinking water to the area below.

    Of course know that altitude makes huge difference to temperature. Both the maximums and the minimums.

    I wonder how long the BOM has ignored this particular aspect of it ‘Mackay’ weather station. Decades by the look ! It’s not measuring the temperatures for Mackay at all.

    As you say, it’s on a hill- Mount Bassett- which is the cause of the slope. Also not far from the old dump, sewage works, a crematorium, and a large industrial area.
